Understanding Medicare Enrollment

Medicare is very specific about when enrollment must be done. There are several enrollment periods to take note of, some of which allow you to enroll in Medicare for the first time or make changes to your current Medicare coverage. The Annual Enrollment Period is one of those periods that allows you to review and make changes to your current Medicare plan, giving beneficiaries like you the opportunity to get the coverage you need at a cost you can afford!

What is the Annual Enrollment Period?

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a time when individuals can enroll in a new policy or switch to another. Keep in mind that you must be enrolled in Medicare already before you can take advantage of this enrollment period.

This period goes from October 15 – December 7 every year. If you miss this period, you may need to wait until the following year to make changes to your coverage. This is one of the reasons why it’s so important that you mark these dates on your calendar, so you know when to start reviewing your current coverage and looking at other Medicare options if necessary.

You certainly don’t have to use the Annual Enrollment Period if you don’t want to and are happy with your coverage. However, you should still take this time to review your plan and any upcoming changes that might be made to your costs and coverage that will take effect starting on January 1.
